Application Example: 3G Mobile Switching Center

What is the 3G Mobile Switching Center?

The 3G Mobile Switching Center (3G MSC) integrates the functions of a Mobile Switching Center (MSC), Visitor Location Register (VLR) and Service Switching Point (SSP) into a single unit. The 3G MSC is responsible for all call handling and also interfaces to other switching elements, both in 3G, GPRS, and GSM networks. Beyond standard GSM interfaces, the 3G MSC also supports the ATM-based interface traffic between the MSC and RNC within the 3G radio network (UTRAN).
