Application Example: Media Gateway
Overview
Media gateways perform a critical function in enabling VoIP services by processing bearer traffic between the PSTN and an IP network. Media gateways process full-duplex voice, fax and data modem calls by performing sophisticated voice coding, modulation, echo cancellation and jitter management algorithms as well as standards-based IP protocols and real-time protocols such as RTP and T.38. Media gateways sit on the edge of IP networks and provide the "on-ramp" for TDM traffic onto the IP network and vice versa.
Media gateways are often called upon to provide media server functionality such as announcements, conferencing and wiretapping. In addition, the function of a signaling gateway is often integrated into a media gateway. Signaling gateways transport PSTN call control signaling, whether it be ISDN, CAS or SS7 across an IP network to a softswitch.
